What's next for marketers in tech, 2027–2029

European marketing openings are still falling, AI is in the requirements of almost half the ads, and the jobs that grow are the ones that own pipeline. Where the openings will be, and what to learn first.

UK marketing job postings stand at 48% of their February 2020 level and German ones at 63%. Both fell another 12 to 15% in the last twelve months [Indeed via FRED, 2026]. At the same time, 46% of marketing job ads at tech companies now name AI in their requirements section, up from 4% in 2022-23 [ai-era-it-jobs, 2026]. There are fewer openings, the bar is higher, and the job behind the title has changed. This post sets out what our forecasts say, where demand still grows, and what I would learn or drop in the next twelve months.

    Where the role stands today

Three numbers frame it. First, openings: Indeed's marketing postings index in September 2026 was 63 in Germany, 48 in the UK, 56 in France and 76 in the US (February 2020 = 100) [Indeed via FRED, 2026]. Second, jobs: US employment of marketing managers rose from 328,570 in May 2022 to 395,240 in May 2025, up 20.3% [BLS OEWS, 2025]. Incumbents kept their seats while hiring stopped. Third, the entry door: only 3.7% of the European marketing titles in my autumn sample are entry-level [ai-era-it-jobs European sample, 2026]. On our scorecard, marketing gets the lowest score of eight IT role families for both demand and ease of entry, level with IT service [ai-era-it-jobs report §12, 2026].

    The trend lines, carried forward

The forecasts come from report §13; each carries a confidence level and an indicator to watch.

    • By end-2027, German marketing postings stay below 60 and UK ones below 48 (high confidence). If June 2027 shows Germany below 63, the call holds. France stays below 52 (medium).
    • The US marketing index stays between 70 and 80 (high). It has sat at 76 to 78 since October 2024.
    • European marketing postings stay below 70% of their 2020 level through 2029 (medium).
    • At least 20% of US marketing postings mention AI by end-2027 (medium-high), up from 14.9% in December 2025 on Indeed's count [Indeed Hiring Lab, 2026].
    • By 2029, more than half of US marketing postings require AI skills, while "AI-native" disappears from most titles (medium).
    • US marketing-manager employment reaches 400,000 to 440,000 in May 2029 (medium), slower growth than in 2022-25.

For the chart I also carried the last twelve months' change forward to December 2027. That is arithmetic, not a forecast: it lands at 52 for Germany, 41 for the UK, 39 for France and 74 for the US.

Five places where demand still grows

    Opportunity map
Eight IT role families by demand and ease of entry, scores 1 to 5, with the outlook to 2029. Source: ai-era-it-jobs report §12 scorecard.
    1. GTM engineering and marketing operations. GTM-engineering headcount at US digital natives doubled in a year to more than 400 [Growth Unhinged, 2026]. My European sample holds 76 GTM, growth or marketing engineer titles: 22 in Germany, 14 in the UK and 9 in Poland [ai-era-it-jobs European sample, 2026]. A marketer who can build the data and automation behind campaigns moves toward this title.
    2. AI search on top of SEO. In the twelve months to June 2026, 720 postings carried "AI search", "GEO" or "AEO" in the title. SEO roles that asked for AI-search skills paid a US median of $117,500, against $97,500 without [Search For Hire, 2026]. In our ads the terms went from zero to 4.1% of marketing pages. Plain SEO fell from 13.2% to 9.7%, so the premium sits on the combination.
    3. Roles measured on pipeline. Pipeline went from 11.0% to 28.5% of marketing ads, demand generation from 10.6% to 17.5%, ABM from 3.3% to 8.3%, events from 37.7% to 46.6% [ai-era-it-jobs, 2026]. Growth marketing was the only marketing role with job posts up year on year in the first half of 2026 at US digital natives [Growth Unhinged, 2026].
    4. A second language in Europe. Among Europe-located postings for business roles, those asking for fluency in a named language rose from 23.2% to 34.6%. German appears in 23.3% of European marketing and sales ads, against 0.4% in the US [ai-era-it-jobs, 2026]. In the 96 Poland-located postings, English appears in 68.8% and Polish in 38.5%.
    5. The move into sales or solutions consulting. On the scorecard both sit a step up from marketing on demand and on entry (3 and 2, against 1 and 1). Indeed's sales index is 91 in Germany and 93 in the US. In consulting ads, "customer-facing" rose from 14.8% to 31.8% [ai-era-it-jobs, 2026]. Product marketers who already run launches and demos are the nearest fit.

Skills to add in the next 12 months, and what to stop

    Skills to add and drop
Non-AI terms in marketing job pages, 2022-23 vs 2026, change adjusted for longer ads. Source: ai-era-it-jobs GTM skills-shift study.

Add these non-AI skills, in this order. Hands-on execution (13% to 40% of marketing ads). Ownership of an outcome (29% to 59%). Pipeline, and the CRM work behind it (CRM 10% to 19%). Storytelling (16% to 31%). Judgement (8% to 23%). Product launches (23% to 36%) [ai-era-it-jobs, 2026].

On the AI side, employers increasingly ask you to build workflows. MKT1 found 15% of 791 start-up marketing posts ask the hire to build AI workflows or agents, and 8% ask for proof that AI improved a result [MKT1, 2026]. CXL counted 40% of US marketing job descriptions requiring AI by the third quarter of 2026 [CXL, 2026].

Stop investing in social media as a standalone skill (29% to 17% of ads), white papers and e-books (16% to 8%), content writing on its own (7.2% to 5.1%) and SEO without AI search. The same goes for CV lines that claim "excellent communication skills" or "detail-oriented"; both fell by 7 to 10 points. One caution: HubSpot's marketers still rank social as their top channel [HubSpot, 2024]. My reading is that tech companies now buy social from specialists or agencies instead of hiring it in-house.

Three indicators to watch in 2027

    1. Indeed's German marketing index in June 2027. Below 63 confirms the decline; a rise year on year would be the first sign of a European bottom.
    2. CXL's second-quarter 2027 count. At or above 45% of US marketing postings requiring AI supports the "more than half by 2029" call.
    3. BLS employment data for May 2026, published in 2027. Growth in marketing-manager jobs below 3% says incumbents are no longer protected either.

    A 90-day plan

    • Days 1 to 30. Pick one campaign you ran and rebuild its numbers: pipeline sourced, cost, cycle time. Rewrite your CV around that result and drop the "passionate" and "detail-oriented" lines.
    • Days 31 to 60. Build one working automation, for example lead enrichment or a content brief pipeline in n8n, Make or HubSpot workflows, and write up its before-and-after numbers. Add AI search to your SEO work and measure whether your brand shows up in answers.
    • Days 61 to 90. Apply where demand is growing: GTM and marketing operations roles, growth roles with a pipeline number, and, if you are in Europe, roles that need your second language. Polish marketers should look at German-speaking DACH roles.
