    The 50 Biggest Solopreneur Challenges

We read all 270 Reddit threads from r/Solopreneur and r/smallbusiness — post and top comments, no sampling — and tagged every one against the recurring problems solopreneurs actually describe. The most-discussed challenge wasn't marketing or pricing: it was COVID-era PPP/EIDL loan chaos, followed closely by 2025 tariff shocks and chronic burnout. Below is the full ranked list of 50, each with real evidence from the data.

Methodology: 270 threads read in full, 175 (65%) substantively discussed at least one of 54 candidate challenges, ranked by thread count with ties broken by combined engagement. Full detail in the methodology section below.

Cite this as an analysis of 270 Reddit threads from r/Solopreneur and r/smallbusiness by Mustard Seed Solutions, 2026. The full ranked dataset is available as JSON below, and the launch write-up covers the biggest findings in narrative form.

    Methodology

All 270 threads in the source dataset were read in full — post text plus the top comments provided for each thread — 73 from r/Solopreneur and 197 from r/smallbusiness. None were skipped or sampled.

Rather than forcing the data into a pre-set list, the full text of every thread was read to surface recurring pain points as they actually appear in the community's own words. This produced 54 distinct candidate challenges; the 4 lowest-engagement candidates were left out of the top 50 rather than padded in.

A thread only counts toward a challenge if the post itself, or multiple substantive top comments, are actually about that challenge — not a passing one-line mention. A single thread can and does count toward multiple challenges, so the counts do not sum to 270.

Ranking is by thread count, descending; ties are broken by combined Reddit engagement (post score plus comment count) summed across the threads counted for that challenge.

95 of the 270 threads (about 35%) did not substantively discuss any of the 54 candidate challenges — overwhelmingly milestone/celebration posts, weekly self-promotion threads, or one-off anecdotes that didn't recur elsewhere in the corpus. These are real threads in the dataset; they simply weren't evidence for a recurring challenge.
