Platform-Dependent Launch
A platform-dependent launch is a motion where the first traction runs through a host platform's own distribution — an app store, a marketplace, an existing ecosystem's directory — rather than a channel the company controls end to end. It works exceptionally well in the beginning: the platform already has the audience, the trust, and the discovery mechanism, and a well-positioned listing can reach more of the right buyers in a month than an unproven company could reach on its own in a year. The risk is structural, not executional — the company's growth curve is partly written by a platform whose algorithm, fee structure, or competitive policy it doesn't control, and every entry in this ledger that used this motion had to eventually answer what happens if the platform changes the rules. The honest version of this motion treats platform distribution as a fast, credible first channel to build from, not a permanent foundation.
When it works
- The host platform's own audience overlaps tightly with the product's actual buyer, so the placement is a match, not just exposure
- The company builds a second, owned channel in parallel, so the platform is a launchpad rather than the entire flight plan
- The economics survive the platform's fee or revenue share at scale, not just during an introductory or promotional period
When it fails
- The company never builds a channel independent of the platform, so a policy or algorithm change removes the growth engine overnight
- The placement reaches a broad audience rather than the specific buyer, producing volume that doesn't convert
- The platform's own competitive product enters the same category, and distribution priority shifts accordingly
The counterexample
This is the same motion, viewed from the other side: the Failure Museum's Ecosystem Failure taxonomy documents exhibits where this exact motion — or its absence — is what killed the market entry.
