ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity can cite very different websites even when they receive the same prompt. Each platform can generate different searches, retrieve from different search infrastructure, rank evidence differently, and make its own decisions about which sources deserve a place in the final answer.
For marketers, this means AI citation visibility is platform specific. Being highly visible in one assistant does not prove that the others can find, understand, or recommend your brand.
Why does the same prompt produce different sources?
The user prompt is only the beginning of an AI search.
Before displaying an answer, an AI system may:
- Interpret the user's underlying intent
- Decide whether live search is necessary
- Rewrite the question
- Generate several searches
- Retrieve candidate sources
- Filter those sources
- Open individual pages
- Extract relevant passages
- Perform additional searches
- Generate the answer
- Attach citations
Every platform can make different decisions during that process.
One difference near the beginning can create a completely different citation list by the end.
How does ChatGPT select its search sources?
OpenAI says ChatGPT Search can rewrite a user's request into targeted search queries before sending them to search providers.
After examining initial results, ChatGPT can issue additional and more specific searches. OpenAI also says ChatGPT Search ranking considers multiple factors intended to surface reliable and relevant information.
OpenAI operates OAI SearchBot for ChatGPT's search features and recommends allowing the crawler if you want your site to be eligible for inclusion.
You can review the current workflow in OpenAI's ChatGPT Search documentation.
The important AEO implication is that the query ChatGPT retrieves against may differ from the words the customer originally typed.
Why might Claude cite another set of websites?
Claude also treats web retrieval as a multi step process.
When search is available, Claude can decide whether current external information is necessary and run one or more searches. Anthropic's search system can return source URLs, titles, page age information, and content for Claude to evaluate.
Claude can also use dynamic filtering to narrow retrieved information before it reaches the model's working context.
Anthropic separately operates Claude SearchBot to improve search result quality and Claude User for user initiated page retrieval.
Those layers mean Claude can diverge from ChatGPT even before either model starts composing the final answer.
Why can Gemini's citations look different again?
Gemini has a direct grounding workflow with Google Search.
Google says Grounding with Google Search connects Gemini to real time web content. Gemini can generate search queries, execute them through Google Search, process the resulting information, and return a grounded response with citations.
Google documents this process in its Gemini grounding documentation.
That gives Gemini a different retrieval environment from Claude, ChatGPT, or Perplexity.
It also means conventional Google visibility can be particularly relevant to Gemini discovery, although ranking well does not guarantee that Gemini will cite a page.
Why is Perplexity structurally different?
Perplexity has built search infrastructure specifically for retrieval by AI systems.
Perplexity describes a production search architecture using distributed indexing, hybrid retrieval, multi stage ranking, and content extraction. Its system considers both document level relevance and relevant sections or passages within documents.
That architecture is described in Perplexity's search research.
This gives Perplexity direct control over a large portion of the path between the user's question and the information presented to its answer model.
The result is another distinct pool of possible citations.
Does citation overlap tell us which AI is more accurate?
Low source overlap does not automatically mean one platform is wrong.
Several reliable sources can support the same conclusion. Two systems can also interpret the same question differently and investigate different aspects of it.
The more useful question is whether each citation actually supports the claim being made.
When comparing AI answers, evaluate:
- Whether the source directly supports the claim
- Whether the information is current enough
- Whether primary sources were available
- Whether commercial recommendations have evidence
- Whether important counterevidence was ignored
- Whether the cited page says what the AI claims it says
Citation presence is useful. Citation quality matters more.
What does source divergence mean for brands?
Your brand needs more than one path into the AI information ecosystem.
If all of your online evidence lives on your own website, you depend heavily on that domain being discovered and selected. Independent mentions create additional retrieval opportunities.
A stronger public information footprint can include:
- Your company website
- Industry publications
- Customer reviews
- Professional directories
- Partner websites
- Interviews
- Relevant communities
- Research and original data
- Comparison content
- Expert commentary
The goal is to make accurate information about the brand available across multiple environments an AI system might retrieve.
This is one reason AI visibility should be treated as a broader marketing problem rather than only a page optimization problem.
How should you measure citation overlap yourself?
Build a fixed set of customer questions and run the same questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity.
Focus on questions with commercial relevance.
Track:
- Every domain cited
- Every page cited
- Brands mentioned without citations
- Competitors recommended
- First party sources
- Third party sources
- The claims each source supports
- Which domains repeat across prompts
- Which domains appear on only one platform
Then repeat the test later.
Do not treat one run as a permanent ranking. Search results, models, retrieval systems, prompts, and available sources can change.
The objective is to discover durable patterns across the questions that matter to your buyers.
