Does Claude Depend More on Brave Search Than ChatGPT Depends on Bing?

Claude and Brave Search versus ChatGPT and Bing illustration

Claude appears to have a closer publicly observable relationship with Brave Search than ChatGPT has with Bing alone. However, treating Claude as simply Brave and ChatGPT as simply Bing ignores the additional crawling, filtering, query generation, ranking, and retrieval systems each company operates.

For AEO, the practical lesson is to avoid optimizing for a single traditional search engine and assuming that work automatically transfers to every AI assistant.

Is Claude web search powered by Brave?

There is strong public evidence connecting Claude's web search to Brave Search.

Anthropic added Brave Search to its subprocessor disclosures after launching Claude web search. Independent developer Simon Willison also documented matching results between Claude and Brave and identified Brave specific parameters in Claude's search tooling.

You can review his analysis of Anthropic and Brave Search.

That evidence makes Brave an important surface to monitor when studying Claude visibility.

It does not mean Claude simply takes a Brave search results page and turns it into prose.

What happens after Claude retrieves search results?

Claude has its own reasoning and retrieval behavior layered around web search.

Anthropic documents a web search tool that can run searches, receive current web results, and attach citations to the resulting answer. Claude can also perform multiple searches as it investigates a question.

Newer versions of the search tool support dynamic filtering. This lets Claude process and filter retrieved material before the most relevant information enters its context.

Anthropic also operates Claude SearchBot, which it says navigates the web to improve search result quality. Blocking Claude SearchBot can prevent Anthropic from indexing content for search optimization.

That creates several possible visibility stages:

    • Search engine discovery
    • Anthropic crawler discovery
    • Query relevance
    • Search result filtering
    • Page retrieval
    • Citation selection
    • Final answer generation

Ranking in Brave may help with one part of the process without controlling everything that follows.

Does ChatGPT depend on Bing in the same way?

Bing matters to ChatGPT Search, but OpenAI does not describe ChatGPT Search as a Bing only product.

OpenAI says ChatGPT can rewrite a user's prompt into one or more targeted queries and send those queries to third party search providers. Its current documentation lists Bing among those providers.

ChatGPT may review initial results and then send additional searches to other providers.

OpenAI also operates OAI SearchBot. OpenAI says allowing OAI SearchBot is important for a website to be included in ChatGPT Search.

The current process is described in OpenAI's ChatGPT Search documentation.

This means a Bing ranking can be relevant while still representing only one piece of the ChatGPT visibility system.

Why Claude versus Brave and ChatGPT versus Bing is too simple

AI search adds several layers between traditional search rankings and the final answer.

A conventional search engine generally needs to decide which documents match a query. An AI assistant may first decide what queries to create, then retrieve results, examine them, generate follow up searches, select evidence, and construct a response.

The original customer prompt might never become an exact search query.

    For example, someone might ask:

"Which marketing consultant should a small B2B software company hire for AI visibility?"

The AI system could investigate related ideas such as:

    • AI visibility consultants
    • B2B AEO services
    • GEO consulting companies
    • AI search optimization agencies
    • Consultants for ChatGPT visibility
    • Small business AI marketing consultants

Your visibility depends on whether you are discoverable across that broader information space.

This is one reason query fan out matters for AEO.

Should you optimize for Brave to appear in Claude?

Brave visibility is worth checking if Claude is important to your audience, but it should be part of a broader technical and content strategy.

Start by making your important pages accessible to relevant crawlers. Anthropic separately identifies Claude SearchBot for search optimization and Claude User for user initiated retrieval.

Anthropic explains those crawler roles in its crawler documentation.

Then focus on content that clearly answers the questions Claude may need to research.

    Useful signals include:

    • Clear service descriptions
    • Strong topic coverage
    • Specific answers to customer questions
    • Original evidence
    • Accurate company information
    • Credible third party mentions
    • Pages that can be retrieved without technical barriers

Brave visibility can tell you something about discovery. It cannot guarantee Claude will recommend or cite the page.

Should you optimize for Bing to appear in ChatGPT?

Bing should remain part of the plan, especially because OpenAI identifies it as one of ChatGPT Search's third party search providers.

However, optimizing only for Bing creates a blind spot.

OpenAI says OAI SearchBot must be allowed for inclusion in ChatGPT Search, and ChatGPT can use multiple search providers. ChatGPT also performs its own query rewriting and answer generation.

A practical ChatGPT visibility plan therefore includes:

    • Bing visibility
    • OAI SearchBot accessibility
    • Strong technical SEO
    • Clear entity information
    • Relevant third party mentions
    • Content covering real buyer questions
    • Pages with specific supporting evidence

This broader approach is more durable than chasing one search backend.

What should AEO teams measure separately?

Do not combine all AI visibility into one number without understanding where the mentions come from.

    Track Claude and ChatGPT separately.

    For each platform, record:

    • Whether your brand appeared
    • Which page was cited
    • Which third party sources were cited
    • Which competitors appeared
    • What customer problem triggered the mention
    • Whether search was used
    • How your company was described
    • Whether changing the prompt changed the source set

Then compare those observations with your visibility in Brave, Bing, Google, and other discovery surfaces.

Patterns across repeated prompts can reveal where the problem begins.
